Tip 189: Videotape yourself

The most realistic way to get feedback about your presentation style, delivery and impact is to videotape yourself whilst you are practising or actually performing your presentation. In some ways, this is a far superior way to get honest feedback than asking a human audience who may feel inhibited by out of politeness or affection.

The video never lies.

This can be a very scary process of self-discovery, but you will definitely learn a lot about how you communicate, your facial expressions, body language and mannerisms.

Also, there are certain things which you may not like about your presentation style which would be very difficult for your audience to describe to you. This however is easy for you to detect if you could watch yourself performing your presentation.

If you do not have access to a suitable video camera, you might want to try the "record" function of your computer�s webcam, a dictaphone or at the very least a mirror!

About the author

Dr Mandar Marathe graduated from Southampton University with an honours degree in Biomedical Sciences in 1998 and a Bachelor of Medicine degree in 1999. He holds advanced qualifications in Emergency Medicine and in Toxicology.

He juggles a career as a doctor working in Accident & Emergency, while raising three children with his wife, writing books, and endlessly surfing the internet looking for the next "big thing".

With almost two decades of public speaking experience in both academic and professional arenas, he is today an enthusiastic and popular educator who is well qualified to share his ideas about what makes a successful speaker and a powerful presentation.
