Tip 61: Respect your audience

Being at the front of an audience of people can give some speakers such a sense of power and authority that they come across as arrogant, condescending, disdainful or cocky.

This is not appropriate.

When you are speaking, you must be dignified and humble. Never allow yourself to feel superior to anyone else in the audience. They will not appreciate you for it and you will almost certainly be embarrassed about it afterwards.

The group of people in front of you has been winnowed down from all the people in the world by a complicated and elaborate process. Even if they are junior to you, you should treat them as at least your equals and peers, if not higher than that. They deserve your utmost respect and should be treated as favoured guests.

About the author

Dr Mandar Marathe graduated from Southampton University with an honours degree in Biomedical Sciences in 1998 and a Bachelor of Medicine degree in 1999. He holds advanced qualifications in Emergency Medicine and in Toxicology.

He juggles a career as a doctor working in Accident & Emergency, while raising three children with his wife, writing books, and endlessly surfing the internet looking for the next "big thing".

With almost two decades of public speaking experience in both academic and professional arenas, he is today an enthusiastic and popular educator who is well qualified to share his ideas about what makes a successful speaker and a powerful presentation.
