Tip 146: Vary the text, graphics and audio

No matter how interesting your presentation is and no matter how slick your presentation style is, you will soon bore and tire your audience if you subject them to an end endless barrage of text slides. The same applies to a long chain of graphic-heavy slides which demand a lot of thought and mental processing activity from your audience.

You should avoid this tedium by having some variety in the sequence of your slides. After a short run of text slides, insert some photos, and after some photos, return to text or some audio or video. You can maintain your audience's interest and attention in this way.

About the author

Dr Mandar Marathe graduated from Southampton University with an honours degree in Biomedical Sciences in 1998 and a Bachelor of Medicine degree in 1999. He holds advanced qualifications in Emergency Medicine and in Toxicology.

He juggles a career as a doctor working in Accident & Emergency, while raising three children with his wife, writing books, and endlessly surfing the internet looking for the next "big thing".

With almost two decades of public speaking experience in both academic and professional arenas, he is today an enthusiastic and popular educator who is well qualified to share his ideas about what makes a successful speaker and a powerful presentation.
