Tip 15: Have something relevant to say
One incredibly effective way of making your audience engage with your presentation is to make it relevant to everyday issues that each member of your audience faces. This is where it is vital to know your audience.
Give your audience very specific, relevant examples or stories from your own life or experience with which they can identify, and show how that relates to a more general concept that can be applied in other situations that your audience faces.
It is particularly effective to talk about how your idea or concept has changed your life or your working practices. You must be a shining advocate of your own message by graphically and explicitly showing your audience how you have put your ideas into your everyday practice.
Alternatively why not frame your idea in the context of a solution – no, the solution – to a burning problem that your audience is experiencing. Focus your audience’s attention by asking them to apply your ideas to their everyday working context, and by suggesting possible applications for what you are saying.
This really helps to drive home the practicability of your message and can set your audience’s minds buzzing with imagination as they try to visualise how they can benefit or profit from your idea.
This often leads to really fruitful questions and a productive discussion after a presentation, which can benefit the speaker by giving new ideas and insights.
