Tip 76: Have a backup plan available
When you are using technology in your presentation, you must always have a backup plan in case the technology is not available unexpectedly. Something can, and often does, go wrong with the computer, the projector, the software, the cables, the power supply or your presentation itself.
You must do everything possible to get yourself back on your feet in the fact of technical failure:
Save your presentation on alternative storage devices – on USB sticks and onto a writable CD-ROM, and take them with you.
Save your presentation in different formats such as PDF or Word.
If you have web mail account such as Hotmail.com or Yahoo! Mail or Gmail, email yourself a copy of your presentation and leave it in your inbox. If you need to access your presentation from a foreign venue it will be in your inbox.
Take a print out of your slides or OHP transparencies – one sheet of A4 paper for each slide.
Despite all these measures, always be mentally prepared to deliver your talk without any slide, transparencies or props, just in case. Your presentation and your message are too important to be cut short due to technical failure: the show must go on!
