Tip 234: Refer to other speakers

You should aim to give a unique presentation each time. Your presentation should be tailored and personalised for each occasion that you deliver it. Each audience is a unique synthesis of different individuals, groups, locations, events, moods, themes and thoughts… it would be simplistic to deliver the same presentation every time.

Your presentation must acknowledge and reflect the uniqueness of the situation, otherwise there is little benefit of you being there – your audience may simply read your standard script at home.

You will achieve more interaction and get more satisfaction if you customise your talk for each audience. They will be able to relate and respond to your message better if you address their unique features.

A good way to customise the presentation is to mention speeches which have preceded yours or will come after yours. You may want to meet beforehand with other presenters who you know, or who are talking on the same subject matter and discuss the contents of your presentations so that each of you can cross-reference each others talks.

About the author

Dr Mandar Marathe graduated from Southampton University with an honours degree in Biomedical Sciences in 1998 and a Bachelor of Medicine degree in 1999. He holds advanced qualifications in Emergency Medicine and in Toxicology.

He juggles a career as a doctor working in Accident & Emergency, while raising three children with his wife, writing books, and endlessly surfing the internet looking for the next "big thing".

With almost two decades of public speaking experience in both academic and professional arenas, he is today an enthusiastic and popular educator who is well qualified to share his ideas about what makes a successful speaker and a powerful presentation.
