Tip 83: Know what you are presenting
Sometimes you will be asked to give a presentation where the presentation slide set will be given to you by someone else. At other times, you may find yourself giving a presentation that you have already previous given to a different audience. The mistake some speakers make in this situation is to assume that all the hard work has already been done.
This is a dangerous attitude, because you do both yourself and your audience a great disservice if you stand up to give your presentation without knowing the presentation as thoroughly as if you had only recently created it specifically for that audience yourself.
Even if you are given individual slides or a slide-set to present, you still have the scope to select, prioritise or otherwise emphasise elements of the content, based on your knowledge of audience, their background, experience and needs.
You must take time to get to know the content of your presentation. Know the supporting data for any ideas you will present. Think about the questions that may arise from this audience. Find ways of personalising the presentation for this unique audience. Rehearse the presentation as many times as you can, exactly as if you were giving it for the first time.
