Tip 38: Open with a personal story or anecdote
Another way to grab your audience’s attention in the crucial few minutes at the start of your presentation is to tell them a story. People like listening to stories and it helps them to relate to you and your background. You and your audience may start out as strangers, but a personal story at the beginning of your presentation can very quickly make you seem like a trusted old friend.
You have considerable flexibility in deciding what sort of story to tell – it may be relevant to the content of your presentation, such as how this subject changed your life. Alternatively your story may be something otherwise mundane such as your journey to the event venue or something from the news. Maybe there have been problems with the transportation system in the city or particularly severe weather – this is a particularly powerful way to connect with your audience as there could be aspects to your story that they may be able to relate with.
