Tip 139: Use colour
You should give a thought to using colour in your presentation. You can apply colour to the slide background, the text and the graphic elements.
Colour is an important non-verbal communication tool.
You can convey a lot of meaning simply through a careful selection of colour. Also, colour evokes feelings and emotions. The right colour can help motivate and persuade. There is evidence that the use of colour can increase interest and improve understanding and retention of information.
For example, red can be used to reinforce your message to your audience that they must not do a particular thing; green can be used to indicate that a course of action is safe and should proceed. Cool backgrounds such as blue and green can help an audience relax, while warm backgrounds such as orange and red can stimulate the audience.
Make sure that your choice of colours is complementary and contrasting, although never clashing. Avoid using too many different colours, and keep the colour scheme simple, consistent and easy to understand.
Finally, remember that upto 10% of the population has some difficulty with colour perception, so don't rely on colour alone for distinguishing meaning between different types of text.
