Tip 34: Establish the mood

As the beginning is the initial contact between you and your audience, it is vitally important for you to set the "mood" of your presentation. You audience will very quickly pick up on your cues, so this is the ideal time to convey to your audience whether you want the mood to be serious, happy, sombre, jovial or entertaining, for example.

Your audience will generally reflect the mood that you project onto them. If they feel you are happy, they will be happy. If they feel you are serious, they will be serious. By controlling the tone and pace of your voice, your actions, your body language and the pace of your presentation you can project onto your audience the mood that you want to create.

About the author

Dr Mandar Marathe graduated from Southampton University with an honours degree in Biomedical Sciences in 1998 and a Bachelor of Medicine degree in 1999. He holds advanced qualifications in Emergency Medicine and in Toxicology.

He juggles a career as a doctor working in Accident & Emergency, while raising three children with his wife, writing books, and endlessly surfing the internet looking for the next "big thing".

With almost two decades of public speaking experience in both academic and professional arenas, he is today an enthusiastic and popular educator who is well qualified to share his ideas about what makes a successful speaker and a powerful presentation.
