Tip 29: Have a logical, clear structure

The structure of your presentation is paramount to its success. The structure is the skeleton of your argument, and you will use it as a scaffolding to build the details of your presentation with. Without a strong structure, your content, style, delivery and great supporting visuals will fall flat.

If you took the time earlier on to outline your ideas and message and set them up in a logical fashion, then your thinking should be very clear by now. You can visualize the logic of your content and the flow of the presentation. If your ideas are not clear first, it will be impossible to design the proper structure later when you create visuals and supporting documents.

When you start to analyse great presentations by other people, you will notice that usually the entire presentation is one big story. There is a definable beginning, middle and ending. You should aim to emulate this highly successful and natural format of giving a presentation.

About the author

Dr Mandar Marathe graduated from Southampton University with an honours degree in Biomedical Sciences in 1998 and a Bachelor of Medicine degree in 1999. He holds advanced qualifications in Emergency Medicine and in Toxicology.

He juggles a career as a doctor working in Accident & Emergency, while raising three children with his wife, writing books, and endlessly surfing the internet looking for the next "big thing".

With almost two decades of public speaking experience in both academic and professional arenas, he is today an enthusiastic and popular educator who is well qualified to share his ideas about what makes a successful speaker and a powerful presentation.
