Tip 45: Give your audience a way of tracking progress
Have you ever had to endure a presentation where the speaker just went on and on and on, and you were getting frustrated because you didn’t know when he or she was going to end? I certainly have, on many occasions. And it’s not necessarily because the speaker was bad or the topic was boring – this can happen even if the presentation is otherwise good.
Your audience naturally wants to know how much longer the presentation will last for. If the speaking slot is a fixed time such as 15 minutes at a conference, then they can keep track with the watch. Otherwise it can be very frustrating to not know whereabouts in the presentation you are.
One simple way to avoid this problem is to give your audience an easy way to know where you are in your presentation. Title your talk in such a way that your audience knows how long you will be speaking for. For example – if the title of you presentation is "7 strategies for market capitalisation in a globalised economy", and you are talking about strategy number 4, then your audience will know that you are roughly half-way through.
